“Harmless comedy that could be a little more hard-hitting”

Ed Night has broken his foot. People tell him it will be “good for the show”. And occasionally he manages to find humour in his predicament, with funny anecdotes relating to hospital waiting rooms and the state of the NHS. But in teasing us about exactly how he broke his foot and then never telling us the circumstances, it feels like the show is building to something that we never quite get.
Along the way, Ed shares a moving insight into his relationship with his mother – how their relationship has changed as she grows older and he begins to worry about her more than she worries about him. This section has the potential to provide a much deeper, emotional backbone to the show, but again feels underdeveloped. Instead, this devolves into a crude comparison between millennials and boomers – the perceived privilege of the older generation, and the struggles of current 20 somethings. This is nothing new – this feels like material we have all heard before and Night struggles to put a new spin on it.
Where he feels fresh and different are in his comments about depression and bisexuality, yet the jokes are sometimes delivered with such intensity that it elicits nervous laughter from the audience rather than natural reactions. There are some genuine laughs here, but it comes with a narrative that never feels particularly well-realised. Harmless comedy that could be a little more hard-hitting.
