It’s almost that time of year again, where representatives from across Europe (and Australia) come together to celebrate increasingly wacky styles of music, and in its honour, Rhymes Against Humanity and SASS improv have teamed up to bring us a night of hilarious musical comedy in the form of an improvised Eurovision. Across the two hour show, a team of talented comedians perform as various characters from fictional nations, making songs up on the spot using inspiration from audience members. The entire thing is hosted by Robin Hood and Friar Tuck, winners of last year’s Improvision, with assistance from the Merry Thems.

The competition was fierce this year, with Old Farmer Joe representing The Farm, who gave a particularly moving performance entitled “I didn’t kill my family”, whilst Mowgli from The Jungle had an existential crisis over his own identity and his milk preferences. Representing the Memeverse, Salt Bae brought a little bit of sass with his rendition of “The Ballad of Kerry Katona”, and The PJ Party from Dreamland got all the audience involved with a particularly raunchy song about baking a birthday cake.
Upon arrival, audience members are asked to provide suggestions such as emotions, occupations and locations. Based on these suggestions, Ella Coachella performed a song about a secretive Tik Tok influencer, and Hot Doggy Dog embodied a nostalgic fortune teller. Each act is preceded by a voiceover that gives us extra details on the performer, akin to Graham Norton’s commentary on the TV. After all acts have performed, the audience are treated to a quick recap of each song – adding to the hilarity as cast members had clearly forgotten their original improvised choruses. Some cast members doubled up as multiple contestants, resulting in some very quick (and very funny) costume changes as we raced through the recap reel.
Then it’s time for the vote, before the winner is revealed. This year, the crown went to Megafauna from Pangea, for their performance of “Don’t ask me to kill your dad”, based on the audience suggestion of overwhelmed senior assassin. It will now be their turn to host this infamous contest when Improvision returns to Nottingham next year.
And if you can’t wait until then, Improvision takes place all over again tonight (9th May) at the Lantern Theatre in Sheffield!
